As if moving isn't crazy enough, we have also taken in a young feline mamma-to-be! I picked her up on Tuesday from someone who had found her wandering around her house but couldn't keep her. I figured that while I'm waiting to care for foster kids or for babies of my own, I can help her care for hers!
We haven't named her yet. I'm trying not to get too attached, because we may not be able to keep her forever. We're just calling her "Mama Kitty," trying to keep it simple. She's a sweetheart, very accepting of caresses and even of grooming. I took her to the vet on Wednesday and he said that she would probably deliver in a couple of weeks. I've been studying cat pregnancy, labor, and newborn kitten care rather frantically.... I know they're usually fine on their own, but I'll feel better knowing that I'm prepared.
Maggie and Nina aren't sure what to think of this third brown tabby. They pretty consistently stand watch over her door, sniffing and pawing at it. We've kept her separated in case she was sick and so they can have some time to adjust to the presence of a third cat.
If any of you have ever had a mamma kitty, could you pass along some tips or resources??

What a beautiful kitty! We had a cat give birth in a closet once where I used to work. We really didn't have to do anything, except find homes for the kittens! Good luck with her!
That sounds like so much fun! I don't know the first thing about cats at all, let alone mama cats, but I grew up hearing many fond stories of the time my dad's family's cat had kittens and how entertaining those kittens were. I hope you can find homes for them all!
We had three cats have kittens while I was growing up, and I don't remember a whole lot, but I do remember that not all of our cats were able to do everything they were supposed to... So I think reading up on everything is a good idea, in case you do need to help out. I remember one of our cats had trouble dealing with the afterbirth (I know, gross), but we knew ahead of time how to help so it turned out ok. Good luck!
I had two kitties give birth in my house. It's a lot of fun to have new kittens! You're really going to enjoy it.
The best advise I can give you is to help her out with the nesting process. In about a week or two, she'll start lurking around the house trying to find a space that she considers safe. We helped our first kitty with nesting and, luckily, she took to the box we had set up for her in our laundry room. She was able to have her own spot to take care of the afterbirth and other messes. Our other kitty was more resistant to the nesting spot we set up for her. She ended up tearing a hole in the fabric under my sister's mattress for her kittens. It worked out fine, but we'd have been happier if she'd chosen the laundry room.
Also, don't be alarmed if her nesting spot changes numerous times after she gives birth. This is totally normal, so one day you may wake up to the sounds of kitties in your closet when they were originally in the kitchen :D.
